stores. The chestnut fencing was moved to suit each extension with no refusals from the Commons Committee!

In 1929, "Spuds" was transferred to his firm's London Office in St. George's Square but returned every Friday night.  Although he had rooms with a Mrs. Chapman who kept a small shop and off-licence in the village, he usually slept at the Scout Hut:  in summer, a bell tent was left pitched for this purpose!

From it's earliest days, the Troop stressed the camping and international sides of Scouting. In 1913, the Troop attended the Birmingham Rally at Perry Hill;  in 1920 they were present at the International Rally at Olympia when Sir Robert Baden-Powell was acclaimed "Chief Scout of all the World".  In 1923, the Troop made a cycle tour of Northern France;  went to the Imperial Rally at Wembley in 1924;  attended the International Jamboree at Arrow Park, Birkenhead in 1929;  visited a standing camp at Vasouy near Honfleur in 1928 and took part in several Rover hikes in Normandy and Brittany.  A contingent was present at the World Jamboree held in Holland in 1937 which
coincidentally was the year that the Group celebrated it's Silver Jubilee.

In those years, camps in the Cherrington and Gatcombe areas were a regular weekend activity and a well laden trek cart hauled by sweating and straining Scouts was the mode of transport for kit and equipment. Other Troop camping expeditions took the form of canal barge cruises and at least two train expeditions to the Highlands of Scotland were enjoyed in the mid-thirties.

The thirties was also a time of achievement for the Troop's swimming team who on a number of occasions won the District and the County Challenge Cups.
Notwithstanding the problems of leader shortage during the '39-'45 war,  continuity of the Group was maintained during these difficult years:  "Spuds" continued to serve the Group as GSM until his retirement in 1955. After over 40 years of outstanding service to Scouting, his retirement was marked by a reception and presentation in the Town Hall, Nailsworth.
